A horrendous first inning led to a laugher of a loss to the Orioles.
The Cubs didn't appear to show up defensively in the top of the first and
gave up twelve runs. Tom Barnes was the unfortunate pitcher. Tom had
mastered the Orioles in his previous two starts against the Orioles, but
this was not a good day. Tom made it through 5 innings
allowing 11 hits and only 7 earned runs out of 13 given up.
Several positive things happened in the game however. The most
encouraging thing was the Cubs refusal to quit. In the bottom of the
seventh the team faced a mercy situation. However two runs were scored
to prolong the game. Dan Gould and Bob Zeleznik both pitched very well
in Cub debuts. Each went two innings and didn't allow a run in their
first inning pitched.
Offensively, Bryon Withers continued his amazing season going 2 for 3
with a double and a wicked deep triple. 8 of the 11 Cubbies collected
at least 1 hit.
