The Cubs won the second game of the double header against the Braves to
sweep the season series 3 games to 0. The score was 13-1. Dating back
to last year's playoff humiliation of the Braves, the Cubs have beaten
the Braves 4 consecutive times by a combined score of 50-6! Andy
Luckhardt had another sterling performance going the 7 inning distance
allowing 5 hits and one earned run. He struck out 10 and walked just 2
batters. Amazingly, Andy has registered 32 Ks with just 3 walks in his
4 appearances covering 19 innings pitched.
The Braves played with only 8 players so they had an automatic out every
time the ninth batter position came up. Coupled with Andy's 10 Ks, the
defense only had to record 8 outs! I can't remember any gems, but there
was an outfield assist from the center fielder in the third inning.
14 hits and 6 walks translated into 13 runs for the Cubs. As in the
first game of the double header, a huge two out rally early closed the
door on the Braves. This time it was the third inning, when with two
outs, 6 straight Cubs reached base to score 5 runs. You can't read this
recap and miss the day Eddie Murray had. He was 3-3 with a walk and 5 RBIs
in the second game alone! For the double header Eddie was 5-6 with a
walk, a triple, 8 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Eddie drove in more runs single
handedly than the entire Braves team did in both games. There were many
offensive heros in this game though. Bryon Withers was 2-3 as in game
1, and he had 2 doubles, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Bryon was 4-6
with 2 doubles, 5 RBIs and 4 runs scored for the double header. Bill
Keville had a great day, in game 2 he was 2-3 with a double and a triple.
Pete DiNatale was 2-3 with another walk, he had 4 walks and 3 runs
scored in the 2 games. Dan Gould was 2-5 over the two games with 2 runs
scored and an RBI. Mark Grogan produced a run scoring line drive single.
Tony Leary had a great game going 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI.
