Box Score

What can you say about this tough loss. Tom Barnes pitched a wonderful game allowing just 2 hits through 6 innings. However, some sloppy play in the field cost Tom and the Cubs 3 unearned runs which was the difference in this game. Tom went the distance striking out 5 and walking 2. He deserved a win but the defense and the bats didn't help Tom much.

The best defensive play was actually turned in by Tom on a wicked one hopper to the mound that Tom snared and fell on his back. From his back he threw out the runner at first base!!

Offensively, the Cubs only produced 5 hits and 3 runs. The star was Bryon Withers who slammed the first homerun for the Cubs this season. His amazing streak of reaching base in every at bat this season ended on his last at bat though. Bryon's streak stopped at 13. Chris Dunn continued his torrid start to the season by picking up a single and an RBI. Brian Donnelly hit a clutch sac fly in the fifth to give the Cubs a 2-1 lead. Bill Keville had a good game at the plate with two solid contacts, one which went for a single. Tom Jette laid down a beautiful sac bunt in the eighth which helped to produce the Cubs third run.
