1996 Season

In our first season as a club we still managed to compete and go 9-11. Matt Corkum was the team's first manager. The Cubs had no home field in their first season. We had the best pitcher in the League with Will Lessard. However our defense was porous and Will had to throw a lot of extra pitches. Andy Schultz was our second pitcher and did a wonderful job whenever his number was called. Ron Villa had the unenviable task of catching for Will, what an incredibly hard assignment for having not caught in so many years. Ron was a battler though and did a nice job.

Our major contributors at that plate were Rich Schwarz, Will Lessard, Glen Waugaman, Dave Russo, and Matt Corkum. Although often injured, Brian Pettis came up with some big hits during the season.

There were several important role players in that first season including Frank Fazio, Lou Alteri, and Jack Hinendale. Who can forget Carlos Luna, the often late but always entertaining whistler. The most famous Lunism was "Help juself".

Without a doubt, the most memorable game of the season was the 4-1 victory over the Orioles in game 11. It was the Orioles first loss of the season and Will was masterful in shutting down the Orioles offense!! The first Cubs game was a landslide victory over the Phillies!

1997 Season

In just the Cubs second season in the MSBL, they won the inaugural National League Championship! The Cubs went 13-4 in the regular season, a 5.5 game turnaround from 1996. Will Lessard took on the role of manager in 1997. Stone Park in Ashland served as the Cubs home field this season. Brian Pettis and Phil LeBlanc were not able to come back for the 1997 season, but the Cubs made huge pickups with Steve Delvecchio, Tim Murphy, John Sudkin, and Bryon Withers. Steve played a lot of third and added a strong bat. Tim played some first and was always chasing that most consecutive times on base record. John played second base and added a power hitting left handed bat to the lineup. Bryon became the catcher and did a tremendous job. The pitching and catching combination of Will Lessard and Bryon Withers is the best battery in the MSBL. Bryon was a most feared power hitter too. Some of the bombs he hit in 1997 are still looking for a safe place to come back to earth.

Will Lessard carried the pitching load again in 1997, however Andy Schultz pitched much more in this season which allowed Will to rest for the playoffs. Also, Bryon Withers picked up a few solid innings. Our defense was still a problem in this season but it was much improved from 1996.

At the plate we had similar strong bats from the previous season but added the four new bats.

1998 Season

The Cubs won the 1998 League Championship! The Cubs went 12-5 in the regular season, and 4-0 in the playoffs. John Sudkin was the manager. 1998 was the first year that Algonquin Regional High School served as the Cubs home field. The third season brought some notable losses to the Cubs roster, Steve Delvecchio, Jack Hinendale, Dave Russo, Ron Villa, Glen Waugaman. However, there was a great recruiting class in 1998 including Tom Barnes, Pete DiNatale, Mark Flynn, Brian Hill, Tony Leary, and Bob Zeleznik.

Will Lessard was not able to carry the pitching load this year as he ran into some arm trouble. Tom Barnes pitched a ton and carried us through the playoffs. Andy Schultz again pitched a lot of innings and Bryon Withers also chipped in.

This was the best defensive club in the Cubs history. Although the beginning of the season was a bit rough, as the season progressed so did the defense.

Offensively, this team was loaded from top to bottom. In one playoff game 8 different batters scored or drove in a run. There were no easy outs in this lineup.

1999 Season

The Cubs entered the 1999 season as defending league champions. The league switched from aluminum to wood bats. The team lost one of its key members, Will Lessard, through free-agency when Will decided to play for the Orioles.

The Cubs had an incredible 8 rookies in 1999, the year after the Championship win. The rookies included:
Brian Donnelly, Chris Dunn, Dan Gould, Mark Grogan, Tom Jette, Bill Keville, Andy Luckhardt and Eddie Murray.

1999 marked the first year that the league voted for all-star representatives. The Cubs representatives were:
Tom Barnes, Dan Gould, Andy Luckhardt, Rich Schwarz and Bryon Withers. The two alternates were Peter DiNatale and Eddie Murray.

2000 Season

The Cubs 2000 season featured another incredible post season run with the teams third trip in five seasons to the finals. It was a heartbreaking loss in the finals, but still a great season for the Cubs. The Cubs have been the team to beat in the National League over the past four seasons.

The Cubs had another fantastic offseason acquiring new players. The 2000 rookie crop included Earl Carpenter, Dennis Fontecchio, Chris Greig and Tim Shaver. Earl led the team with 2 bomb homers and did a fantastic job pitching and catching. He also played some shortstop for the Cubs. When Dennis Fontecchio started at short for the Cubs in the middle of the 2000 campaign, the Cubs entire season turned around. Dennis was a flawless shortstop and managed to bat .379 in his first season. Chris Greig was the starting catcher in 2000. With the team losing Bryon Withers, Chris filled a vital hole at the catching position. His solid defense and powerful bat helped the Cubs tremendously. Tim Shaver played a ton of second base in 2000 and hit .341 from the left side. Tim is a line drive hitter with surprising pop in his bat. All four of these players were critical to the Cubs success in 2000!

The Cubs home field was Algonquin Regional High School.

2001 Season

The Cubs had a very tough start to the 2001 season when they started out 2-6. However, the team was jump started by a 3-0 shutout victory over the powerhouse Orioles on 6/24. Tom Barnes threw a masterpiece that day. The other regular season highlight was the extra inning victory over the Phillies on 7/8. That game was the 100th regular season game in Cubs franchise history and the Cubs rallied from a 6th inning 10-2 deficit! The 2001 season ended in the National League Championship series with a tough loss to the Phillies 2 games to 1. The Cubs won the first game behind Earl Carpenter 3-1 and lost the next two games 10-8 and 4-3. The last game was tied at 3-3 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth when a single scored the winning run. While it was tough to lose the game, it was one of the most exciting series the Cubs have ever played in. Those were 3 fantastic ball games.

There were three rookies in the 2001 season. All three played vital roles during the 2001 campaign. Mark Kujawski was called into emergency duty on 6/3 to help the Cubs avoid a forfeit. Mark made the game and played for the rest of the season. Mark played mostly at third base. Kujo had a great day on 7/29 driving in 6 runs during a double header against the Mariners. Bruce Sher played most of the infield positions during the season. Bruce had an incredible season at the plate leading the team with 25 base hits. He was second in batting average with an amazing .556 average! The other rookie was Paul Sonnett. Paul stepped right in as a regular catcher for the team and played great at that critical position. Paul also chipped in with a .340 batting average and several critical RBIs during the season.

In the 2001 season, the Cubs lost Tony "Package" Leary and Jon Sudkin from the roster. We still hold out hope that both these players will return to the roster at some point in the future. Package had been a three year veteran for the club and was a very popular team member. Tony was always willing to be hit by a pitch to help the team out. One of Tony's career highlights was a double he hit in the 1998 Championship series game against the Orioles that started the game deciding rally. Jon Sudkin had played four years from 1997-2000 and managed the club in 1998. Jon had a fantastic swing from the left side of the plate and had numerous huge hits during his career. He had 6 RBIs during the 1998 Championship run and his career average was over .300.

Offensively in 2001, the Cubs were led by Eddie Murray (.585, 17 RBIs), Bruce Sher (.556, 9 RBIs, 11 Runs), Tom Barnes (.395) and Tim Shaver (.382, 10 RBIs, 16 Runs). Dan Gould continued to terrorize opponents with his speed. When Dan reaches first base via a single or walk, it is practically an automatic double. Dan scored 13 runs in 11 games. For the first time since the 1999 season, someone besides Tom Barnes led the team in innings pitched. Andy Schultz, a six year veteran and original Cub, led the team with 12 appearances, 47 innings pitched and 3 wins. It was Andy's finest season on the mound. Earl Carpenter also had a great season on the mound with 3 wins, 26 innings pitched and a 3.81 ERA. During the playoffs, Earl was unbelievable, throwing two complete game victories allowing just 1 earned run for a 0.50 ERA! He had 14 Ks in those 18 innings. Dennis Fontecchio led the defense with a great job at shortstop in 2001. Chris Greig played a limited role in 2001, but in his 6 games he had a .353 batting average and pitched in three games. Mark Grogan had a .324 batting average with 2 doubles and a triple in 2001. Tom Jette really came to life in the playoffs as he scored 3 runs during the playoff run. Tom also did a great job at third base during 2001.

After not voting for All-star representatives in 2000, the league actually held an All-star game in 2001. The Cubs representatives were Tom Barnes, Dennis Fontecchio, Eddie Murray and Andy Schultz. Earl Carpenter, Bruce Sher and Paul Sonnett were the alternates. Eddie Murray had a fantastic first inning in the All-star game hitting a home run and throwing out a runner at home from right field!

For the fourth consecutive season, Algonquin Regional High School served as the Cubs home field.

2002 Season

The Cubs won their 4th National League Championship in 2002. In the League Championships they were swept by the perfect Orioles who went 23-0 on the season. The Cubs gave the Orioles two good games, but couldn't come up with the clutch hits to win the games. More details on the exciting playoff run will follow later.

The Cubs went 12-6 during the 2002 regular season which was their best record since going 12-5 in 1998. The Cubs got out of the gate fast going 6-1 in the first seven games. The Cubs also managed to win their last three games of the season. Of the Cubs 6 losses, 4 were by one run, the Cubs came close to having a totally amazing regular season! Regular season highlights include sweeping the Yankees on June 2 and having second baseman Peter DiNatale complete the first triple play in Cubs history. During the same double header, Earl Carpenter hit homers in three consecutive at bats going 5-5 on the day with 7 RBIs! The Cubs had a 9 inning shut out the Mariners 2-0 on July 28 allowing just 5 Mariner runners to reach base. Andy Schultz and Earl Carpenter combined on the three hitter. Earl also shut out the Phillies in the second game of a double header allowing just three hits. Andy Schultz had his best pitching performance of his 7 year Cub career getting the win and going 9 innings against the Braves and allowing just 1 earned run on August 11th. The Braves were 14-2 going into that game. Dennis Fontecchio had a great 7 game hitting streak including 5 straight games with 2 hits a game. The game after his streak was broken, Dennis followed up with a 3-3 game.

The Cubs 2002 playoff run was one of the most incredible set of games I've ever watched or played in. The Cubs won 3 of their first 4 games to win the National League Championship for the 4th time in the last 6 years. All 4 games were decided by one run and the Cubs never led after 8 innings in any of the 4 games. The first game was against the Phillies. Trailing 13-11 entering the bottom of the ninth, Chris Greig hit a bomb of a homer on a two strike pitch. After a Mike Cox walk and a fielders choice, Bruce Sher doubled home the tying run. Eddie Murray capped the comeback with the game winning RBI single to right. The Cubs then lost a heart breaker to the Braves in game 1 of a double header 3-2. The Cubs had the tying runner in scoring position in each of the last five innings but couldn't get the run home. Then came the most magical playoff game in Cubs history. Facing elimination for the second time in two weeks, the Cubs had a most improbable comeback. The Cubs were trailing 6-1 in the bottom of the eighth and scored two runs on RBI singles by Tom Barnes and Peter DiNatale. Then, trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the ninth, the Cubs rallied for 4 runs to win the game, all four runs scoring after two outs were made. Brad Adams led off with a single followed by a walk to Tim Shaver. A fielders choice left runners at first and second. Matt Finnegan loaded the bases with a single. After a strike out, the Cubs were faced with a bases loaded, two out, three runs down elimination scenario. Mike Cox stroked a two strike single into the shortstop hole bringing in two runs. Rich Schwarz followed with a two strike flair to right to tie the game. Dennis Fontecchio followed with another two strike hit, his third hit of the day, to win the game! In the National League Championship deciding game, the Cubs entered the ninth inning in a 4-4 tie. Matt Finnegan led off with a single. After a sac bunt and ground out left Matt at second, Dennis Fontecchio was the hero again singling in the game winning run for a 5-4 win.

There were 5 rookies in the 2002 season, the most since the 1999 season. Brad Adams had a fantastic rookie campaign leading the team with 15 RBIs. Brad also batted .395 for the regular season. Brad played a solid first base. Brad had a two out 2 run single on 7/28 against the Mariners that won the game 2-0. He also made a diving catch against the Cardinals on 8/18. Brad pitched 6 times and showed some nasty stuff too. Mike Cox joined the team a couple weeks into the season. Mike's highlight for the season was delivering a 2 out 2 run single in the bottom of the 9th with the Cubs facing elimination. Mike went on to score the winning run of that game against the Braves on 9/8. Mike also stroked two triples during the season and had his best regular season game 0n 8/18 against the Cardinals going 2-3 with 3 RBIs. Chris Dionne had played 1 game for the Cubs in the 2001 season, but was expecting to play full time in 2002. Unfortunately a bad back limited Chris to just 6 games. Brian Egan joined the Cubs in 2002 as an outfielder. Brian made the adjustment from softball to baseball during the season. His finest game of the year was in the 8/18 game when he reached base all 5 times he came to the plate and drove in 2 runs and scored 2 runs. Matt Finnegan played in all 18 games in his rookie season. Matt led the team in walks with 10 and delivered numerous clutch hits during the season. His biggest regular season hit may have been the two out two run double against the Cardinals on 6/30 that turned a 5-4 deficit into a 6-5 lead. Matt was huge during the playoffs going 5-11 and scoring 3 runs in 4 games. Matt went 3-3 with 2 runs scored and an RBI in the National League Championship clinching game.

The 2002 season saw three players leave the team. Mark Grogan had played three seasons. His finest season was the 2000 season when Mark hit .429 with 15 hits and 12 runs scored. Mark was always hoping to get a chance to pitch, but unfortunately his arm gave him troubles. He had a serious heater when healthy. Tom Jette was also a 3 year veteran of the Cubs. Tom played a very solid third base and always seemed to play his best ball during the playoffs. Tom had fantastic playoffs in all 3 of his seasons. Mark Kujawski played just the 2001 season for the Cubs. He made many contributions in his one season. We hope all three players may get the opportunity to play with the Cubs again in the future.

Of course during a 12-6 season there are contributions from many players. The Cubs had a tremendous season and were led offensively by Dennis Fontecchio. Dennis batted .500 with 21 hits in the 2002 season. It's hard to believe considering Dennis missed the first several weeks with a broken bone in his hand. He also continued to anchor the defense with great play at shortstop. Dennis also batted .500 during the playoffs with another 10 hits to go 31-62 over the course of the season. Dennis also delivered in the clutch driving home the winning run with two outs in the Cubs last at bat of the 2 National League Championship series wins over the Braves. Brad Adams led the team with 15 RBIs followed by Dennis and Paul Sonnett who drove in 13 a piece. Paul led the team with 16 runs scored followed by Earl Carpenter and Eddie Murray who each scored 13 runs. Earl had the 3 homer day against the Yankees and led the team with those 3 homers. Tom Barnes hit .436 (17-39) and Andy Luckhardt hit .400 (10-25) to follow Dennis in batting average.

There were several players who pitched effectively for the Cubs in 2002. Tom Barnes led the team in innings pitched with 41 and went 6-2 on the season. Earl Carpenter pitched 35 innings in the regular season and went 3-2 with a sparkling 2.6 ERA. Earl also dominated the Braves in the National League Championship winning game going 7 innings allowing just 1 earned run. Andy Schultz had his second consecutive great pitching season, throwing 32 innings with a 3-1 record. Andy had a no hitter for three innings before leaving the 7/28 game against the Mariners and beat the 14-2 Braves in a complete game victory on 8/11. Chris Greig pitched in 5 games and picked up 2 saves.

The second annual league All-star game was held on September 29th. The Cubs representatives were Dennis Fontecchio, Rich Schwarz and Tim Shaver. Brad Adams, Tom Barnes, Earl Carpenter, Eddie Murray and Paul Sonnett received enough votes to represent the Cubs but were unable to attend. Rich had an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth and scored the tying run on an RBI double by Dennis! The National League went on to win in 10 innings 5-3 after trailing 3-1 after 8 innings.

Other key players during the 2002 season included Peter DiNatale who had been playing part time for the last two seasons and played full time in 2002. Peter batted almost .300 and drove in 8 runs while playing a great second base. Tim Shaver split the second base duties with Peter in 2002 and played very solidly. Tim had 9 walks on the season, second only to Matt Finnegan and drove in and scored 8 runs. Bruce Sher, off a totally amazing 2001 season in which he hit .556, batted .375 with 12 hits, just 1 K and 5 walks. Eddie Murray had another fine offensive season batting .381 (16-42) with 8 walks and 0 Ks. Eddie was the only Cub in 2002 who did not strike out.

For the fifth consecutive season, Algonquin Regional High School served as the Cubs home field.

2003 Season

The Cubs won their 5th National League Championship in 2003. The Cubs went 13-4 and set several team records along the way. Among the team records set or tied during 2003:
Some other interesting stats from the season include pitching 3 shutouts (one was game 1 of NLCS against Cardinals), winning 3 games by the score of 2-1 (twice in the playoffs) and playing the Orioles to game 3 of League Championship the first time the League Championship Series has ever gone to three games. We may have set a team record by hitting 3 sac flies in one game on 7/27 against the Brewers (Peter DiNatale 1, Andy Luckhardt 2)

There are so many highlights for this amazing season, it's hard to list and remember them all. Andy Schultz, one of two remaining full time original Cubs, has been improving with age. On 7/29 Andy threw a gem against the Braves at their home field in Millis for the second season in a row. On that night Andy threw a complete game, 8 innings allowing 1 run on 7 hits. Andy was great that night and he gave the Cubs a chance to win. Andy went 4-0 on the season, Andy also made a diving catch in right field during last game of year. On 8/10 Andy Schultz pitched clutch against the Phillies in game 1 of a double header. With the Cubs holding an 8-7 lead, the Phillies loaded the bases on two singles and a HBP with no outs. Andy went on to strike out the next three batters to keep the Cubs lead in tact. Andy Luckhardt also had a pitching gem during 2004. Against the Indians on 8/3, Andy went the full 9 innings giving up two earned runs in the 9th inning and tossing a 5 hitter while striking out 9. Tom Barnes started the season by throwing 15 consecutive shutout innings at home in games on 5/18, 6/8 and 7/20 (2 7 inning 1 hit shutouts included!). Tom also threw a 7 inning 2 hit shutout in the first NLCS game against the Cardinals on 9/14. Perhaps the best performance of the year was turned in by Earl Carpenter on 6/29 against the Braves. Earl went 9 innings allowing just 3 hits and no runs!

During the season, the Cubs collected home runs from 5 different players, 2 from Glenn Legault. 5 Cubbies batted .400 or better led by Earl .438, Dennis Fontecchio .435 and Eddie Murray .431. Tim Shaver batted .405 and had a team leading 13 RBIs tied with Eddie. Tim also collected his first career homer as a Cubbie in the last regular season games against the Orioles. Glenn and Dennis tied for team lead with 14 runs scored.

The Cubs had several clutch moments at the plate in 2003, as you must to have a 12 game winning streak. In that incredible Braves game on 7/29, Andy Schultz's pitching allowed for a miraculous comeback. It was supposed to be a 7 inning game. The Cubs entered the top of the 7th trailing 1-0. With one out Paul Sonnett was hit by a pitch and he scored on Earl Carpenter's huge double. The Cubs won it on the 8th with Andy Luckhardt leading off with a triple and scoring on a Dan Gould single. On 7/27, Peter DiNatale had a 2 run bases loaded single in the 7th to give the Cubs their first lead of the game at 6-5. Peter hit his first Cubbie career homer on 7/13 against the Yankees. In that same game, Andy Luckhardt delivered a 2 out triple in 4th inning turning 1-0 deficit into 3-1 lead. Eddie Murray delivered a two out RBI single against the Mariners on 8/17 in the top of the sixth to tie the game at two. Chris Greig had a great game on 5/4 against the Cardinals. Chris pitched the last 5 innings to pick up the win and he smoked a two run triple. Chris followed that up in the next game on 5/18 going 2-4 with a homer and 3 RBIs. Paul Sonnett had two perfect days at the plate in 2003. On 4/27 Paul went 3-3 with a walk and RBI and on 6/8 Paul was 2-2 with a walk. Brad Adams was 3-5 with 3 RBIs in the Cubs first win of the year on 5/4.

Big innings for the Cubs:

Date Opposing Team # of Runs Inning
5/4 Cardinals 5 3rd
5/18 Yankees 8 4th
6/15 Brewers 7 2nd
6/15 Brewers 5 5th
6/29 Braves 6 7th
7/13 Yankees 7 5th
7/20 Cardinals 7 6th
7/27 Brewers 7 9th

The Cubs had a great year on defense. Look at all the plays made in one game, on 7/20 against the Cardinals: Tim Shaver made a great play up the middle on the second batter of the game. A grounder looked like a sure hit but Tim went to his right, gained his balance and fired to first to get the out on a bang bang play.
In the third, Dennis Fontecchio snared a shot in the shortstop hole and threw out the runner (the same guy Tim robbed!).
Paul Sonnett threw out two Cardinals runners at first base (3rd and 5th innings) from his catcher position.
Perhaps the best play of all was Brad Adams diving snare of a grounder at first base to end the fourth inning. Brad had to dive to his right, then get up and beat the Cardinal runner to first base.
In game 2 of the double header on 8/10 against the Phillies, more great defense: Peter DiNatale made a terrific sprawling play at second base on a slow roller to get an out at first base. Eddie Murray made a huge catch in right field on a screaming line drive over his head.
Eddie Murray had a great year in right field. Eddie made two diving catches in the first game of the year against the Indians.
Rich Schwarz had two great catches in 2004. With a 0-0 game in the top of the 7th against the Braves on 6/29, Rich made a diving catch in right center on a line drive off the bat of the leadoff hitter. Rich made a diving catch in left center with the tying run on third base and two outs in the LCS victory over the Orioles in the 5th inning.
Peter DiNatale at second and Dennis Fontecchio at short turned some key double plays during 2003. In the 5/4 win over the Cardinals they turned a 4-6-3 DP in the seond inning giving the Cubs momentum as they went on to win their first game of the season. They also helped on 6/29 turning a 6-4-3 DP which kept Earl's shutout in tact.

In the 2003 season, the Cubs had 2 true rookies and two veterans return to the squad. The two rookies were Bruce Diaz and Glenn Legault. Bruce only played in 5 regular season games as Little League coaching commitments caused several missed games. Bruce played a good second base and had an RBI single against the Indians in his first Cubbie at bat! Bruce also had a great SAC bunt in the first Braves game that helped the Cubs break a 0-0 tie in the 7th inning. Glenn Legault was a tremendous addition to the Cubs roster. Glenn showed incredible grit and toughness during the season. Glenn played third and was the Cubs leadoff hitter. Glenn batted .500 during the playoffs and always tended to raise his play against the tougher teams. Glenn led the team with 14 runs scored and he had 2 HRs and 12 RBIs too. Glenn had a great day on 5/18 against the Yankees when he had a triple and homer and 3 RBIs! The returning veterans were Mark Grogan and Will Lessard. Mark had played with the Cubs from 1999-2001 and took the 2002 season off. Mark played most the the season as an outfielder and had his best game on July 27th against the Brewers when he went 2-4 with 2 RBIs. Will Lessard returned to the Cubs after a 4 years absense. Will was an original Cub and played from 1996-1998 helping the team win its only League Championship in 1998. Will returned in 2003 after arm surgery in the offseason. Will was limited to 11 games during the regular season, but did bat .414 with 12 hits. On 5/18 against the Yankees, Will went 3-3 with an RBI and on 7/20 against the Cardinals had a bases loaded 3 RBI double.

The Cubs had 5 players leave the roster in 2003. Those players included Mike Cox, Chris Dionne, Brian Egan, Matt Finnegan and Bruce Sher. Mike Cox joined the Cubs in 2002 as an outfielder and just couldn't make the time commitment for the 2003 season. Chris Dionne played a few games in 2002, but a bad back has all but ended his time with the Cubs. Brian Egan played the 2002 season for the Cubs and decided to take 2003 off. Matt Finnegan had a great season for the Cubs in 2002, but he decided to play for the Cardinals in 2003 as there was a better match there. It worked out great for Matt and we were happy to see him flourish as a Cardinal. Bruce Sher was a tough loss for the Cubs. He led the team in batting in his rookie season in 2001 and in his 2 seasons as a Cub he batted an astounding .481!

The third annual league All-star game was held on October 5th. The Cubs representatives were Tom Barnes, Glenn Legault, Eddie Murray and Paul Sonnett. Earl Carpenter and Andy Luckhardt received enough votes to represent the Cubs but were unable to attend. The National League squad won big and Cubs players made impacts in the game.

After having Algonquin Regional High School for a home field for 5 years, the Cubs used a new home field in Southboro this year. The field was called Mooney Field and was a great place to play.

2004 Season

For the first time in 8 seasons the Cubs failed to reach the National League Championship game when they lost to the Cardinals in the first round of the playoffs. It was a disappointing and early end to another otherwise exciting Cubs season.

In the 2004 season, the Cubs had 2 rookies, Tom Whiting and Wally Siggins join the squad.

The Cubs had 3 players leave the roster in 2004. Those players were Bruce Diaz, Dan Gould and Will Lessard. 2003 was Bruce's only season with the Cubs and Little League coaching time requirements prevented Bruce from returning. Dan Gould had played in parts of 5 seasons with the Cubs, but found it difficult to make the time commitment to play. Dan remains on the sub list. Will Lessard was an original Cub that left for a few years and suffered some health setbacks. He rejoined the Cubs in 2003 but wasn't able to make it back for the 2004 season.

The fourth annual league All-star game was held on October 17th. The Cubs representatives were Tom Barnes, Glenn Legault, Eddie Murray and Paul Sonnett. The National League squad lost the game this year.

Mooney Field in Southboro served as the Cubs home field for the second consecutive year.

2005 Season

The Cubs finished in a three way tie for first place with a 12-6 record in 2005. The Cubs took first place as a result of tiebreakers. For the second year in a row the Cubs lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Cardinals to make an early end to what had been a successful season. The Cubs have won 5 National League titles in their 10 seasons.

In the 2005 season, the Cubs added three players to the roster, two of which were players who had been on the squad in previous seasons but left the team. Matt Corkum and Jon Sudkin returned to the roster, it was great to have them both back. Chris Ricker was the lone rookie added to the roster in 2005. Matt Corkum was the first manager the Cubs ever had and has always been the ultimate teammate, a great hitter and lef fielder. Unfortunately, Matt's Cubs career has been cut short due to injuries. His love for the game has never waned though. Matt's dedication to the Cubs and the league was honored in 2005 by becoming the first Cub player to be inducted in the league Hall of Fame.

Jon Sudkin was the manager of the Cubs in 1998 when the team won the League Championship. Jon had to leave the team due to back woes and other commitments after the 2001 season. The 2001 season recap mentions the many contributions Jon made to the Cubs team.

Chris Ricker had a solid season in his debut. Chris was forced to jump around defensive positions but seemed to settle in nicely at third base. He also came up with a few timely hits during the year.

The Cubs had 2 players leave the roster in 2005. Those players were Tom Whiting and Wally Siggins. Both players joined th eteam for the 2004 season but unfortunately had their Cubs career's cut short by injury. Tom suffered from bad knees and only played 3 games in 2004. Wally battled shoulder woes which didn't allow him to pitch all year. Wally did play in 15 games and picked up a respectable 8 RBIs. Wally underwent surgery in the post season and will not be able to return.

The fifth annual league All-star game was held on June 28. The Cubs representatives were Brad Adams, Earl Carpenter, Rich Schwarz and Paul Sonnett. The National League squad shutout the American League squad 5-0. Paul Sonnett had a huge game going 3 for 3.

Some of the 2005 season highlights include the opening game of the year against the Red Sox were the Dennis Fontecchio threw out the postential tying run at the plate in the 9th for an 8-7 win. That win happened to be the 100th regular season win in team history. On 6/12 Brad Adams pitched 5 innings in a huge emergency start against the Brewers and Tom Barnes delivered the go ahead 2 run single in a 6 run eighth inning for the 12-6 win. On 7/10, Earl Carpenter hit "TOLB" (the one-legged blast) only the second ball to be hit out of Mooney Field, a 3 run blast in the 4-1 win over the Red Sox. The Cubs also threw out 2 runners at the plate in that game. On 7/31 the Cubs won a huge game against the Braves 6-5. Andy Schultz went the distance on the mound and the Cubs scored the tying run in the bottom of the 8th on a bases loaded force play. The Cubs won in the bottom of the 9th on a Tim Shaver double and RBI single from Earl Carpenter. The Cubs also had a bottom of the 8th comeback win against the Cardinals on 8/14 winning 6-4. Dennis Fontecchio started the 3 run rally by hitting a ground ball so hard it went through the fielders glove. Earl Carpenter then singled and Andy Luckhardt followed with an RBI double. Tim Shaver scored both runs with a drive down the right field line.

Offensively, the Cubs were led by Earl Carpenter's .617 average and 16 RBIs followed by Eddie Murray (.565) and Paul Sonnett (.489, 15 RBIs). Dennis Fontecchio scored 18 runs to lead the club. Earl Carpenter and Tim Shaver were the only batters to hit homers for the Cubs in 2005. Andy Luckhardt and Tim Shaver led the club with 4 triples each. Andy Schultz and Tom Barnes led the club in innings pitched. Andy was a sterling 7-1 on the season and seems to be getting better with age!

Mooney Field in Southboro served as the Cubs home field for the third consecutive year.

2006 Season

Unfortunately for the Cubs, this was the third season in a row in which they suffered a first round playoff exit. The Cubs will be hoping to change that streak in the 2007 season. While the season ended earlier than hoped, the regular season was a solid one for the squad. The Cubs were 9-5-1, tying the Orioles at 0 in the last game of the season in a 5 inning rainout. That record was good enough for third place in the competitive National League.

The Cubs had a tremendous crop of rookies in 2006. The rookie class included Ken Hamm, Alex Scott and Luis Tiant. Ken had a great year batting .371 and led the team in doubles with 7 and tied for the team lead with Luis Tiant with 14 RBIs. Ken managed to do all this damage in just 12 games. He also pitched in 4 games and earned a win and a save. Ken made an immediate impression on his new teammates by going 3-4 with 3 doubles and 5 RBIs in his first game against the Indians on 4/30. Ken also had a big day against the Red Sox on 8/13 going 2-3 with 1 double, triple and 4 RBIs. He also picked up the win on mound in that Red Sox game. Alex Scott was only able to play in 8 games, but was very productive. He scored 8 runs and batted .350. Alex is a great middle infielder and made several highlight reel plays during the season. Much like Ken, Alex had a huge first game as a Cub on 4/30. Alex scored 4 runs on a 2-3 day with 2 walks. Alex also had a big game on 7/30 in the first game of a double header versus the Cardinals when he went 4-4 with a walk and 2 runs scored. Luis Tiant was a force for the Cubs at the plate with a .375 average and he lead the team with 14 RBIs and 16 runs scored in 15 games. Luis was second on the team with 6 doubles. He and Alex did not strike out all year long. Luis played third base. Luis had 2 4 RBI games, 5/7 versus the Braves and 7/30 versus the Cardinals. He was also 3-3 with 3 runs scored in the 8/13 game versus the Red Sox.

The Cubs had three players from the 2005 squad not return. Veteran players Matt Corkum and Jon Sudkin reretired after the 2005 season. Both players had returned to the fulltime roster in 2005 but nagging injuries didn't allow them to return for 2006. We hope to see both these Cubbies in the future!

We also lost Glenn Legault for the 2006 season because of a shoulder injury that even a first surgery could not resolve. Glenn played for 3 seasons with the Cubs, 2003, 2004 and 2005 scoring 41 runs in 39 games and batting .360. We hope Glenn's shoulder woes get resolved and he can rejoin the squad in a future season.

The Cubs 4 All-Star representatives from 2006 were:
Tom Barnes, Earl Carpenter, Eddie Murray and Paul Sonnett

On 4/30, the Cubs first game of the season, they scored 26 runs on 28 hits! Ken Hamm who was 3 for 4 with 3 doubles 5 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Tim Shaver was 3-5 with 2 doubles and a triple, 3 runs scored and 3 RBIs. Paul Sonnett had 4 hits including a double and triple and 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Earl Carpenter had 3 hits including a triple and 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
On 7/9, again against the Indians, the Cubs won 14-13 with a remarkable game ending play. the Indians were mounting a comeback with runners at first and third and just 1 out. The leadoff hitter was up and drives a ball to right field that looks like a hit off the bat. Eddie Murray makes a nice catch on the liner running to his left and then squares himself and fires a bullet strike to Paul Sonnett at the plate to nail the runner trying to tag up by 10 feet, game over! Dennis Fontecchio was 3-5 with an RBI (game tying 2 out single in the 8th) and 2 runs scored. Luis Tiant was 3-5 with 2 doubles, 2 RBI (game winner in bottom of 8th) and a run scored. In the 7th, Eddie Murray (2-4, RBI, run), Paul Sonnett (2-4, RBI, 2 runs), Ken Hamm ( 2-4, double, RBI, 2 runs), Brad Adams (2-4, RBI, run) and Tim Shaver (4-4, 2 RBIs, 2 runs) had 5 consecutive 2 out singles.
On 7/30, The Cubs beat the Cardinals 16-8. The Cubs overcame a 4-0 deficit after the first inning. Mark Grogan delivered a huge 2 out 2 RBI triple to left center in the top of the second to start the comeback. Mark ended up with 4 RBIs for the game. Alex Scott was 4-4 with a walk and 2 runs scored.

In 2006, our pitching leaders were Andy Schultz with 48 innings and Tom Barnes with 41 innings. Andy was 4-3 and Tom was 3-1. Rookie Ken Hamm threw 15 innigs in four games and was 1-1 with the team's only save. On offense, the Cubs were led by Paul Sonnett's .432 and 19 hits. Eddie Murray at .417 and Earl Carpenter at .400 also had great years. Rookies Ken Hamm and Luis Tiant led the team with 14 RBIs while Luis led with 16 runs scored and Ken led with 7 doubles. Tim Shaver led the club with 2 triples.

Mooney Field in Southboro served as the Cubs home field for the fourth consecutive year.

2007 Season

Unfortunately for the Cubs, this was the fourth season in a row in which they suffered a first round playoff exit. The Cubs will be hoping to change that streak in the 2008 season. While the season ended earlier than hoped, the regular season was a solid one for the squad. The Cubs had the best record in the entire League going 13-3. This was the best regular season record the Cubs had ever had after going 13-4 in 1997 and 2003.

Rich Schwarz was the manager as he had been since 1999 (9 seasons). Mooney Field served as our home field again as it has been since 2003 (5 seasons).

The Cubs 2007 crop of rookies added three strong pitching arms and a third baseman which helped the Cubs to the league's best record. Looking back on it now in 2010, it also set the foundation for the back to back titles in 2008 and 2010. We just didn't know it back in 2007. The rookie class in 2007 included:
Bill Bracken, (played 1 game in 1997)
John Gordon,
PJ O'Toole, (only 4 games) and
Rich Wenning.
Bill Bracken, who reminded many folks of Curt Schilling, played in 14 ganes in 2007. Bill's main contribution was on the mound as a hard throwing righty. He did have a nice 2-3 with 2 RBIs day against the Indians on 7/1 in a game the Cubs won 7-1. He was 2-0 on the mound in 6 games over 15 innings with 16 Ks and a 2.40 ERA.
John Gordon came to the Cubs on Father's Day (6/17) against the White Sox to help prevent the Cubs from a forfeit. John made his impact felt as the season progressed. He played in 8 games, pitching in 6 of them, going 4-0 with a save in 30 innings with 31 Ks and a 2.10 ERA. In his first start as a Cub, John went 8 innings allowing 1 run against the Phillies. John has been a dominant pitcher in our league ever since he joined the Cubs. He batted .316 in 2007 with 7 RBIs.
PJ O'Toole was a part time player for the Cubs in 2007, playing just 4 games. He played all positions for the team and has a very powerful swing coming to the Cubs after having played for D1 Providence College.
Rich Wenning played third base and had his first game in Holliston against the Mariners on 5/6, the Cubs third game of the year. We migth have had to forfeit that game had Rich not shown up, and not only did he prevent the forfeit but came up big and helped the Cubs win that day. Rich was a solid third baseman and batted .393 in 11 games. Rich's big offensive game came on 7/8 versus the Phillies when he went 2-4 with a double, triple and 4 RBIs in a game the Cubs won 15-1.

The Cubs lost 2 players from the 2006 roster. Peter DiNatale did not return due to a rotator cuff injury suffered in a game on 5/6/06 against the Braves while making a diving play up the middle on a grounder while playing short. Peter had a very good career for the Cubs playing in 8 seasons. He was a slick fielding second baseman with pop in his bat. He was a member of the first Cubs championship team in 1998. In that 4 game playoff run, Peter was 8-12 with 7 runs scored.
The Cubs also lost Chris Greig in 2007. Chris joined the team for the 2000 season and as of 2010 was the only player the Cubs ever drafted from the league pool. The Cubs needed a catcher that season and Chris did a great job filling that position. Over the years Chris played catcher, third and pitcher. Chris had trememndous power and hit one of the furthest balls we hav eseen at our Mooney Field park. He played in 49 games over 7 seasons and pitched in 26 of them. He had 2 regular season homers and one of the most clutch postseason homers in Cubs hiostory in 2002. In a first round playoff game versus the Phillies, the Cubs were trailing 13-11 in the bottom of the 9th and Chris hit a homer on a two strike pitch to make the game 13-12 and start the game winning rally.

Tom Barnes, Eddie Murray and Paul Sonnett were the 2007 Cubs All-Star representatives. Tom pitched 60 of the teams 124 innings this season going 6-2 and managed to hit .419 over 12 games. Eddie led the team with a stunning .537 average over 13 games with 6 doubles and 15 runs scored. Paul continued to be the Cubs starting catcher and batted .313 with 14 RBIs. Paul also reached by error 10 times which may be a Cubs record for a season.

On 5/6 against the Mariners in Holliston, the Cubs managed one of teh most improbable wins ever. The Cubs gave up 7 runs in the bottom of the first to trail 7-0. The Cubs fought back with 5 in the top of the second keyed by doubles by Dennis Fontecchio and Eddie and an error. The Mariners scored 2 in the sixth to make it 9-5. Again the Cubs responded, this time for 3 runs in the top of the 7th. Paul Sonnett doubled home a run and Ken Hamm singled home 2. The Cubs tied it in the 8th on an RBI ground out by Andy Schultz. Paul Sonnett won the game with a 2 out bomb homer to left that cleared the fence by 30 feet.
On 6/10 against the Red Sox, the Cubs won 3-1 ending the Red Sox 11 game winning streak. Tom Barnes picthed 9 innings allowing just 1 run and was helped by several great defensive plays. In the 7th with a runner on first, Steve Saraceno from the Red Sox hit a bullet into right center that Eddie Murray got a great jump on and made a diving catch to rob Steve of extra bases. The Cubs turned sweet double plays in the 4th and 5th innings too. In the 4th it was a 5-4-3 DP from Rich Wenning to Chris Ricker to Ken Hamm. In the 5th it was a 1-6-3 from Tom to Alex Scott and Ken. Earl Carpenter made a nice catch in the first on a liner to deep left while battling a tough sun. Alex also made a nice over the shoulder catch in shallow left down the line from his shortstop position.
On 6/24 against the Braves, the first game of the double header was the 200th regular season game in Cubs history. The Cubs found themselves in a 7-1 hole after 3.5 innings. The Cubs scored a run in the 4th and 2 runs in the 5th before putting up 7 runs in the 6th to win 11-7. The key hit in the 6th was a 3 run homer by Paul Sonnett which turned a 7-6 deficit into a 9-7 lead.
On 7/29 against the Brewers in the first game of a double header, the Cubs again found themselves down by a 7-0 score only to come back and win this game 15-9. Kenny Hamm had an amazing day going 2-2 with a walk, a triple and a homer and driving in 5 runs. Tom Barnes was 3-3 with 3RBIs in the game. In a somewhat odd box score, Chris Ricker had 6 at bats in teh double header going 0-1 with 3 walks and 2 HBPs driving in one run and scoring twice.

Tom Barnes led the team with 60 innings pitched in 10 games with a 6-2 record. John Gordon joined the team half way through the season and was dominant. He pitched 30 innings, striking out 31 and walking just 7. His ERA was 2.10 and he went 4-0 with a save. Offensively, Eddie's .537 season average on 22 hits was amazing. He also led the team with 6 doubles. Luis Tiant led the team with 3 triples and Paul Sonnet led with 2 homers. Rich Schwarz led the team with 18 runs scored while Ken Hamm led the team with 17 RBIs.

2008 Season

The Cubs won their second league championship in 2008 by sweeping the Orioles just as they did for their first championship ten years prior in 1998! It was a very exciting playoff run, as the Cubs went 6-0 outscoring their opponents 36-5 (yes 5 runs allowed in 6 games including 1 run allowed in the last 4 games!) in sweeps of the Phillies, Dodgers and Orioles. This was no fluke, as the Cubs had a 14-4 regular season which was by far the best record in the league. With the playoffs and regular season combined, the Cubs went 20-4. They happened to lose their first two games of the season and ended with a 20-2 run which included a 13 game win streak to end the year. 2008 was the 13th season as a franchise for the Cubs and they remain the only National League team to win the League Championship.

Mooney Field was the home field for the Cubs for the 6th consecutive season. Dennis Fontecchio stepped in to make the game day managerial decisions for the Cubs taking over for Rich Schwarz who had performed the role since 1999.

The Cubs had no true rookies in 2008 for perhaps the first time in team history. Peter Murphy was a roockie, but only played in two games and has not played for the Cubs since.

The Cubs lost original Cub Andy Schultz from the roster in 2008. Andy was one of two Cubs who had been on the fulltime roster since the Cubs franchise was started in 1996. It was sad to see Andy not return. Of course he had many career highlights in his 13 year Cubs career. We don't have stats for the first three seasons of the franchise, so we can't paint a complete picture of Andy's career, but in the 10 years he played that stats were kept, he was 25-8 with 1 save on the mound in 62 games and 288 innings pitched. Andy always elevated his offensive numbers at playoff time and his playoff batting average was 100 points higher than his regular season numbers. Andy was an All-Star in 2001 and had his best three seasons on the mound in 2005-2007. Andy picthed his best against the potent Braves offense and was often called upon to get key wins against that National League foe. Andy had a clutch single in the 9th inning to set up the game winning sac fly in the Cubs first championship deciding game in 1998.
Mark Grogan played for the Cubs from 1999 through the 2007 season, missing the 2002 season. He has seveal highlights already listed in the history page. Mark played in 92 games over 8 season career and had his best years in 2000 and 2001. He also played in 19 post season games. He had ridiculous gas in his right arm, but unfortunately was unable to get the arm to stay healthy enough to unleash it.
The Cubs also lost 2 year veteran Luis Tiant in 2008. Luis had great years in 2006 and 2007 but had too many off field commitments to be able to play for the Cubs in 2008. Luis played in 27 games and batted .321 in his career with 27 hits, 23 RBIs and 24 runs scored. He was a very good third baseman.

The 2008 Cubs All-Star representatives were:
Tom Barnes, John Gordon, Alex Scott and Paul Sonnett.
Tom Barnes split pitching duties with John Gordon during the year by pitching 59 innings in 12 games and going 5-2.
John Gordon was the other half of the pitching core for the Cubs on 2008, going 7-1 with 2 saves in 13 games 64 innings pitched. John had 58 Ks and 10 walks and a 2.52 ERA for the season. John also led the team with 22 hits while recording a .449 average.
The Cubs have been blessed with good shortstops for a long time. Alex Scott continued in that tradition and makes highlight reel plays routinely. He is also the leadoff hitter, and despite playing in only 9 games, led the team with 17 runs scored and a .481 average with 3 triples.
Paul Sonnett continues to be the main guy for the Cubs behind the plate and contributes to the offense as the 3 or 4 hitter in most games. Paul tied John with 22 hits and batted .468 on the season while driving in 15 runs.

Discussing memorable moments of the 2008 season has to start with that incredible post season run the Cubs went on. The Cubs had been knocked off in the first round of the playoffs in 4 consecutive seasons. Despite having the best regular season record in the league for the second consecutive year and being the most dominant National League team in the league since joining in 1996, the Cubs had to be nervous entering the first round against the Phillies. The Cubs swept the Phillies 7-1 and 7-3. Tom Barnes set the tone in game 1 going all 7 innings allowing 1 run on just three hits. Alex Scott scored three times and John Gordon drove in 3 to pace the offense. The Phillies scored in the top of the first and were shut down the rest of the way with the Cubs breaking open the game with a 4 run 5th inning. In game 2, the Cubs scored twice in the first on Earl Carpenter's homer over the center field wall and then 5 more times in the second to cruise to a 7-3 win. The Phillies scored 2 meaningless runs in the bottom of the 7th which would be the only inning in 6 post season games that the Cubs allowed more than 1 run. John Gordon went the full 7 innings and struck out 8.
The National League Championship Series is where this post season turned magical. Terrible luck fell on the Cubs when both of the primary starters, Tom and John who combined to throw 85% of the Cubs innings on the year, had to miss the double header. Things were looking bleak until PJ O'Toole and Ken Hamm stepped up to throw the games of their Cub careers against the Dodgers. PJ started game 1 and threw a 7 inning 6 hit shut out in the Cubs 9-0 win. Ken Hamm matched PJ with his game 2 start. Ken gave up 1 run on three hits with the run being a meaningless last inning run. The Cubs swept the Dodgers by an 18-1 score with both their primary starting pitchers and vital offense cogs out. What a weekend! The Cubs blew open a tight game 1 with a 5 run 6th. Earl Carpenter, Dennis Fontecchio and Brad Adams all drove in 2 runs. In game 2, the Cubs scored 3 times in the first and second innings and cruised to the 9-1 win. The offense was paced by Andy Luckhardt who drove in three runs. It was a remarkably similar script to the first round double header victory. This marked the first time since 2003 that the Cubs had made it to th eleague finals.
Those two league finals games were some of the most intense baseball games I have ever witnessed. The games versus the Orioles were 9 inning double headers. The Cubs won both games 2-0 and the second game took 12 innings! The Cubs held the Orioles to no runs over 21 innings on the day, a truly amazing feat. The defense made 1 error in those 21 innings too which was the difference. In game 1, Tom Barnes shut down the potent Orioles attack with a three hitter for 8 and one third innings to get the win. PJ O'Toole closed the door with two thirds of an inning of work to pick up the save. The Cubs had just 2 hits all game and they both came in the 4th inning to bring home the first run of the game. Brad Adams led off with a single and John Gordon had a huge 2 out single to drive in the runner from third. The Cubs scored in the bottom of the 8th on a John Gordon walk, steal and wild pitch to get to third and the PJ O'Toole reached on a two out error by the third baseman which scored John. Game 2 was an instant classic which the Cubs won 2-0 in 12 innings on a PJ O'Toole suicide squeeze to score Paul Sonnett with one out. Ken Hamm scored later in the 12th on a wild pitch. John Gordon threw 11 scoreless innings, striking out 11 and pitching out of major jams in the 2nd, 7th, 10th and 11th innings. PJ O'Toole picked up his second save of the day with a 1-2-3 bottom of the 12th.

As mentioned in the All-Star section, Tom Barnes and John Gordon split the pitching load in 2008. John's season was one of the better ones ever recorded by a Cub. His 7-1 record matched Andy Schultz's mark in 2005. Tom was 6-2 in 2002 and 2007. The Cubs had an impressive offensive club in 2008. 5 batters hit over .400 on the year including Alex Scott at .481, Paul Sonnett at .468, John Gordon at .449, Andy Luckhardt at .429 and PJ O'Toole at .421. Earl Carpenter led the team with 6 doubles while Alex Scott and Ken Hamm both had 3 triples. Earl and Paul had 15 RBIs and Alex and Rich Schwarz scored 17 runs.
