The Cubs lost to the Orioles 5-2 on 7/31.
The Cubs gave up three soft runs over the first three innings amd struggled on offense against the tough Orioles starter,
Eric Cormier. The Cubs battled as always but just came up a bit short. Jim Callaghan was good for 7 innings despite
a lingering calf issue and John Gordon pitched a perfect last two innings. Chris Ricker had a very good game at third base
and scored the first run by knocking the glove off the catcher whiekl sliding into home. John Ablondi and Dennis Fontecchio
paced the offense with two hit days. The Cubs fanned 13 times, including 10 in the first 4 innings but started to put the
ball in play after that.
The website is whoafully behind right now, but we are making progress to get it back up to date.
The box scores and recaps for the 2010 NLCS and LCS will get added first and then we will catch up to the first 10
games of the 2011 season.
The Cubs were swept by the Orioles in the League Finals on 9/19/10.
It was a great season for the Cubs as they went 15-1 in the regular season for the best record in franchise
history. The Cubs swept all 4 games to win the National League Championship. At that point the Cubs had a
16 playoff game winning streak dating back to the 2008 season. A totally amazing stretch of basecall.
Over the first 15 years of the franchise through the 2010 season, the Cubs have a 172-85 regular season record!
The Cubs swept the Dodgers 12-6 and 11-1 in the first round of the playoffs on 8/29.
The Cubs extended their 2010 record to an amazing 17-1. Of course the record is meaningless now that we are in the
playoffs. The Cubs will host the 13-5 Cardinals in the NLCS on 9/12 and must be ready to compete if they wish to
defend their 2008 and 2009 League Championships.
The bad story in this one for the Cubs was the shaky defense. After being tremendous all year long, the Cubs made
5 errors in game 1. The good news was game 2 was back to normal with just one error. The other good news from
game 1 was Tom Barnes battling on the mound for 8 innings allowing 6 runs, only 2 of which were earned. Also, the Cubs
offense which scored 8 of the 12 runs with 2 out clutch hits including their first 7 runs.
As always for the Cubs, pitching was the key for both wins. Tom Barnes was very good in game one, going 8 innings
allowing just two earned runs. PJ O'Toole pitched a 1-2-3 9th to close out the win. John Gordon pitched 8 scoreless
innings in game 2. John allowed just 3 hits while striking out 8 and facing just 4 batters over the minimum. Wow.
Mark Grogan pitched the 9th allowing a meaningless run in the 11-1 win.
The Cubs bats scored a lot of runs, putting up 23 runs in the two games. In the first game, the first 7 runs
were all scored on two out hits. In the first inning, there were 2 outs and no one on when PJ O'Toole ripped a triple
to right and scored on a bullet single by Ken Hamm. In the second inning with one out, the Cubs loaded the bases with
Dennis reaching on an error, then Ricker lining a single to center and the Glenn getting his first of two hit by
pitches in the game. Tom Barnes then reach on a fielders choice with Dennis being forced at the plate. With the Cubs
trailing 2-1 at the time, this was a huge moment in the game for Brad Adams. Brad cleared the bases with a double to
left center. Roberto followed with an RBI single to put the Cubs up 5-2. In the 4th, there were 2 outs and no one on
base when Dennis and Ricker singled and then Glenn loaded the bases again by getting an HBP. This time Tom Barnes
singled home two runs for a 7-3 lead. In the 6th, the Cubs scored two runs on singles by Dennis and Ricker that drove
home Earl and Eddie. Mark Grogan had a two out RBI single in the 7th which drove home Tom Barnes who had singled to
lead off the inning. Ken and Earl had RBI singles in the 8th. In Game 2, the Cubs scored 11 times. Mark Grogan and
Andy Luckhardt both went 3-3. All of Grogs hit were run scoring singles, what a day! Roberto was 2 for 3 with 2
doubles. Brad had another double and John Gordon had a triple. Alex was 2-3 to go 4-7 on the day. Ricker was 3-5 on
the day. Grogs and Brad led the team with 4RBIs while Dennis led with 3 runs scored.
The Cubs completed their best regular season in team history in 2010 with a 15-1 record!
